ABOUT THE FILM:

In Japanese with English subtitles.

“If you see her, it’s too late. If she falls in love with you, the only escape is death.” MAG MAG is a nightmare in lipstick and endless amounts of hair, an unnerving fusion of J-horror, biting satire, and supernatural obsession. More than a ghost story, it’s a curse born of betrayal and bad love, a delirious puzzle where romance, revenge, and black magic spiral into something venomously alive.

At the center is Sanae: grief-stricken and hellbent on vengeance after the object of her affection falls prey to the ghostly Mag Mag. But revenge is never a straight line, and Sanae’s quest swerves into territory far stranger and more unsettling than any ghost could conjure.

At the helm of this brilliant madness is YURIYAN RETRIEVER—Japan’s most fearless comedian and a two-time America’s Got Talent chaos agent—who pulls from her own scarred romantic history to create autofiction with teeth. The result is a shrieking funhouse of grief and parody, where heartbreak mutates into horror and horror detonates into a gonzo rom-com meltdown.

Forged under the banner of K2 Pictures, the new studio launched in 2023 by Takashi Miike, Hirokazu Koreeda, and Miwa Nishikawa, MAG MAG doesn’t just toy with genre conventions, it shreds them, then reassembles what remains into something feral, hypnotic, and unclassifiable.

Merciless and gloriously unhinged, MAG MAG is heartbreak turned weapon, revenge turned spectacle, and one hell of a debut: a wicked love letter to ruin, rage, and the monsters we make of each other.
