To celebrate the upcoming release of Ash Vs Evil Dead, we figured there was no better way to make it last than with ink, permanent ink.

We’ve partnered with Starz and Studio City tattoo to bring you a series of flash tattoos that will be administered on site to the most dedicated EVIL DEAD fans. We’ll be tattooing at the EVIL DEAD event this Saturday from 5:30 PM and will have a sign in sheet posted up on the front doors of the theater. Tattoos are free and sign up is first come first served.

Also, getting a tattoo gets you into the theater before anyone else so get to Beyond Fest early and get ready to get groovy.

A Salute to the Master: Wes Craven

Presented by Masters of Horror

With the film world still reeling from the loss of an incredible legend, Beyond Fest, the American Cinematheque and Masters of Horror are proud to announce a tribute to Wes Craven, an auteur and icon of the genre.

To celebrate Wes’ life, we’re screening a double bill of A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Serpent & The Rainbow, and will be joined by guests including Robert Englund,Tom Holland, Ti West, Jonathan Craven, and more! Proceeds from tickets sales will go to a charity designated by the Craven family. Tickets will be made available shortly!

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the undisputed genre classics and the film that made Craven a household name. Focusing on Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her friends whose dreams are stalked by a vicious serial killer named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), Nightmare is a masterpiece in tension and discomfort, creating a dream landscape that once seen, can never be unseen or forgotten.

The Serpent & The Rainbow is Craven’s masterful exploration of a tale of horror loosely based on a true story. Dr. Dennis Allan (Bill Pullman), a Harvard anthropologist from the States, is sent to Haiti to find a miraculous powder purported to bring the dead back to life. The cynical scientist quickly finds himself on a nightmarish journey through the darkest heart of voodoo and black magic when he starts meddling in things he doesn’t understand, namely ancient curses and blood rites. Craven’s brilliant gem presents voodoo in a beautifully realistic manner whilst keeping a constant sense of palpable supernatural dread.

Calling All EVIL DEAD-Heads!

The man, the myth, the chin Bruce Campbell is coming to Beyond Fest for a celebration of THE EVIL DEAD presented by Starz and ASH VS EVIL DEAD.

Bruce Campbell, aka Ash, aka Ashley J. Williams, aka He-who-has-come-from-the-sky-to-deliver-us-from- the-terrors-of-the-Deadites, is bringing his boomstick to the Egyptian Theatre on Saturday, October 3rd to get groovy with us all. Bruce will be joined in conversation by director Edgar Wright to talk all things Evil Dead between an epic double bill of the first two movies projected on 35mm.

Tickets for this event are $15 and will go on sale through Brown Paper Tickets on Saturday, September 5th at high noon, however, if you’re a serious Evil Dead fan you have a shot at getting two tickets for FREE before anyone else…

We’re going to be giving away 25 pairs of tickets to the most hardcore Evil Dead fans for FREE this Friday, September 4th at 7PM at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd, however, here’s the catch… To show you’re the most die hard Evil Dead fan you’re going to have to prove it by showing us your Evil Dead tattoo. Yep, that’s right, if you have an Evil Dead tattoo you get two free tickets AND you get early entry into the theater to pick the best seats in the house.

Now, there are guidelines for these tattoos… First, they have to be CLEARLY from the Evil Dead movies, that means Ash, Henrietta, Deadites, the Necronomicon, flying eyeballs into gaping mouths etc. (leave your random chainsaws at home). Second, there’s nothing dainty about The Evil Dead so your tattooes can’t be either – nothing smaller than three inches in length gets you tickets. If you’re not sure if your ink qualifies, email it to info [at] by noon Friday and we’ll let you know what’s up. Tickets are first come first served and you’ll have to line up inside the store along the east wall if you get there early.

We admit, this is pretty nuts but there are some serious fans out there who live and die by these films, it only makes sense to give a little back to those who have supported Sam and Bruce so hard.

For those of you that don’t have an Evil Dead tattoo yet don’t despair, Studio City Tattoo will be on site at the Egyptian on October 3rd giving free tattoos to anyone who wants one. You’ll need a ticket to the show but you’ll get in early if you get a tattoo on site. Follow us on Twitter for more info closer to the event.

Let’s get groovy, Los Angeles.

LEGEND, THE ASSASSIN, BONE TOMAHAWK, YAKUZA APOCALYPSE, THE INVITATION and THE MIND’S EYE join Bruce Campbell, Edgar Wright, Al Pacino, Brett Ratner, Henry Rollins, Shepard Fairey, Fabio Frizzi, Die Antwoord’s Ninja and The Meltdown’s Jonah & Kumail for a slate featuring 16 West Coast Premieres, iconic repertory titles, and live musical performances!

Los Angeles, CA – Thursday, September 3, 2015 – Beyond Fest, the highest attended genre film festival in the US, is excited to announce its full slate of 2015 programming featuring 25 events of mind-bending, movie madness. Presented by Shudder, Beyond Fest returns to Hollywood’s famed Egyptian Theatre for 11 days of movies, music and mayhem spanning Thursday, October 1st – Monday, October 12th to generate funds for co-presenter, the nonprofit American Cinematheque.

With a diverse slate that includes films from all corners of the globe Beyond Fest is proud to present 16 West Coast premieres including Brian Hegeland’s masterful LEGEND as opening night film and Hsiao-hsien Hou’s breathtaking martial arts ballet THE ASSASSIN, to close. Other hotly-anticipated titles include Kurt Russell’s existential western shocker BONE TOMAHAWK, Miike Takeshi’s gloriously outrageous YAKUZA APOCALYPSE and Karyn Kusama’s terrifying thriller THE INVITATION.

“We’re just relieved that a film institution as revered as the American Cinematheque let us come back,” said Beyond Fest Co-Founder, Christian Parkes. “Last year, guests were whipped, they vomited and snorted snuff en masse, it was bedlam. With this lineup I’m proud to say it’s going to be even bigger.”

The legend Bruce Campbell takes center stage with Edgar Wright for an EVIL DEAD double bill for the ages featuring both films projected on glorious 35mm. Tickets will be made available to purchase on Saturday, September 5th at noon PST, however, the most die-hard Deadites will be rewarded early as 25 pairs of tickets will be gifted free to those sporting an EVIL DEAD tattoo. Maintaining the theme and commemorating the night Studio City Tattoo will be on-site providing free EVIL DEAD tattoos for the most hardcore fans.

Two wildly different anniversary screenings celebrate two wildly iconic films with Al Pacino sitting in conversation with Brett Ratner for the 40th anniversary of DOG DAY AFTERNOON, while The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail host an epic 30th anniversary reunion screening of BETTER OFF DEAD with director Savage Steve Holland, Curtis Armstrong, Diane Franklin and more.

Once again, music features prominently in Beyond Fest’s charter with some of the most influential and innovative artists participating. Die Antwoord’s Ninja will be joined by friends as he hosts a rare 35mm screening of ERASERHEAD for ‘A Night of Zef Absurdia.’ Punk icon Henry Rollins is celebrated with the West Coast premiere of his existential cannibal shocker HE NEVER DIED. Post screening, Rollins will be joined by director Jason Krawczyk in a wide ranging conversation moderated by agent provocateur Shepard Fairey.

Legendary composer Fabio Frizzi is performing in Los Angeles for the first time in his illustrious 40 year career. Complete with his 8-piece orchestra, the Maestro will perform FRIZZI 2 FULCI LIVE: his magnificent musical-opus highlighting his work with Lucio Fulci. FRIZZI 2 FULCI LIVE will also feature a rare screening of the Fulci’s gothic masterpiece THE BEYOND uncut, uncensored and in scope on 35mm.

The original 1925 version of Lon Chaney’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA gets the live score treatment courtesy of his grandson Ron Chaney who is screening the masterpiece on 16mm. The 1925 score has remained in possession of the Chaney family since the film’s release and will be performed for one of the first times in 90 years. Ron Chaney will be in attendance to discuss the impact of Chaney’s work.

Premiering live, synth superstar Steve Moore will perform his score to horror wunderkind Joe Begos’ THE MIND’S EYE before the telekinetic shocker receives its hometown throwdown premiere. Moore’s performance will be complemented by the release of a limited 7” courtesy of Death Waltz Records, produced exclusively for the screening.

“Music has been an integral part of Beyond Fest from the very beginning,” said Spencer Hickman, Mondo / Death Waltz Recording Co. Label Head. “The first show we ever booked was Goblin and we’re incredibly proud to build on that foundation with this phenomenal and unique line up.”

Celebrating LA filmmaking remains a priority for Beyond Fest with Karyn Kusama receiving this year’s ‘LA Spotlight’ for her shocking thriller, THE INVITATION. As part of her Spotlight screening, Kusama selected Philip Kaufman’s INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS to accompany her film citing its malevolent corresponding elements and themes.

Beyond Fest welcomes the horror streaming platform Shudder as its Presenting Sponsor, a partnership that provides 10 screenings (9 West Coast premieres) absolutely free to film fans. Every night, the 100-seat ‘Shudder Theatre’ will feature a brand new film selected from across the world including a demented Mads Mikkelsen’s in Anders Thomas Jensen’s unbelievably black comedy, MEN AND CHICKEN, manga favorite / insanely-mental-live-action-madness of ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM, the hyper-violent remake of Mario Bava’s Euro-crime nasty, RABID DOGS, the creepy debut shocker from Oz Perkins, FEBRUARY, Majid Al Ansari’s electrifying cat and mouse thriller, RATTLE THE CAGE (ZINZANA) and the over-the-top martial arts sequel, SPL 2.

“These are some of the best and most provocative films of the year,” said American Cinematheque and Beyond Fest programmer, Grant Moninger. “That we can provide them completely free of charge is very important to us, we’re thankful to Shudder for being a part of our mission to bring great films to the great genre fans of this city.”

Nightcrawler Called ‘nasty, funny film’ by The Guardian at Toronto Film Festival

Nightcrawler which is to screen later this month at Beyond Fest with the director Dan Gilroy in attendance is currently wowing audiences at Toronto International Film Festival.

Reporting from the festival, Henry Barnes wrote in his glowing review:

“From a subdued start Nightcrawler unfurls into a ghoulish and wickedly funny satire on journalism, the job market and self-help culture. Lou is a retro creation: a strange, real character lurking in a moral grey area. Gyllenhaal, slimmed down and bug-eyed, looks like Nosferatu, but has the manic vulnerability of Andy Kaufman. Lou’s like a Wes Anderson character who’s ambition has warped into a realm of violent sociopathy.”

Barnes concludes: “Nightcrawler is a nasty, funny film. A tribute to the vile and a celebration of the dark.”

Twitch calls Tokyo Tribe the Best Musical of the New Decade!

Tokyo Tribe (screening at Beyond Fest with cast members Santa Inoue and Akihito Kitamura) woved audiences at the screening at aToronto International Film Festival got glowing reviews from leading website Twitch.

“Filled with one liners that will make you laugh, bloody violence and great acting (using real rappers, artists, DJs, tattoo designers, etc.), Tokyo Tribe is a film to see with an audience; they will sing and chant, and move their feet around. So, yes it is a very, very fun movie. It might be the most fun that Sono has ever put on screen. It’s also a revelation of how musicals can be executed. Filmmakers, take note, hip hop is not dead.”

Beyond Fest to Host Presentation of Halloween With John Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis Q&A

Cross-posted from Shock Til You Drop:

Beyond Fest makes it return to Los Angeles this month, running September 25th to October 4th at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. And while we’re waiting on the full programming reveal – which is coming soon (and I’ll tell you, it’s amazing from what I’m hearing) – I’m going to share a morsel with you right now.

Pencil this date in on your calendar: Wednesday October 1st. That is when Beyond Fest hosts a special Dean Cundey-approved restored print of Halloween on the big screen. But there’s more: Both director John Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis are going to be attending for a special Q&A!

The fact the two of them are coming together for this event is incredible. And I can’t remember how long it has been since I personally saw Curtis take the stage for a Halloween screening (over 10 years at least).

This fall is a big deal for the Halloween franchise. Anchor Bay and Scream Factory have come together to bring fans a massive Halloween Blu-ray collection that features all of the films with tons of bonus features. That streets on September 23rd (so soon!).

Okay, so you got that, Los Angeles readers? Halloween. October 1st. JC and JLC in the house.

Beyond Fest is going to be nuts…
