This is a film that you may never see in a theater again, if you do it’s at the hands of a very brave distributor. THE WORLD OF KANAKO spearheads three equally brilliant Japanese films at the year’s Beyond Fest and like Tokyo Tribe and R100, it is an assault on the senses. But while its festival peers embrace the outrageous, THE WORLD OF KANAKO is a completely unique and ferocious beast.
Thirteen films into his directorial career, Tetsuya Nakashima has now positioned himself amongst the current Japanese masters Sion Sono and Miike Takeshi: if Confessions cracked open the door, THE WORLD OF KANAKO blows a hole right through it. So transformative is this film that it needs to placed in the same lineage as Tetsuo, Audition and Ichi The Killer, such is the mark that it makes on contemporary Japanese cinema.
Based on the novel Hateshinaki Kawaki by Akio Fukamachi, THE WORLD OF KANAKO follows ex-detective Akikazu Fujishima (the always superb Koji Yakusho – 13 Assassins, Cure) search for his missing daughter, the seemingly “model student,” Kanako. What he finds, however, is a world unlike anything he has experienced in all of his time on the force, a world in which every one of his beliefs and actions challenged.
THE WORLD OF KANAKO is as hyper-violent as it is hyper-kinetic as Nakashima pulls no punches in either department. The result is an instant masterpiece that while provocative and shocking is unflinching in its demand to be seen.
