Father-and-son coroners (Brian Cox & Emile Hirsch) unravel a horrific mystery wrapped in a terrifying riddle when the body of a murdered young woman arrives for a late-night examination.
At the scene of a grisly familial massacre, a small-town Virginia police crew realizes its seemingly open and shut case is anything but when the nude corpse of a mysterious woman is unearthed in the basement.
Seasoned coroner Tommy Tilden (Cox) and his adult son Austen (Hirsch) are about to call it a night at their family-owned morgue/crematorium when the Sheriff arrives with the Jane Doe in tow. In need of urgent answers by dawn, the Sheriff persuades the senior Tilden to drop everything and dig in to the mystery at hand. Compelled to assist, junior Tilden subsequently drops a date with his girlfriend, embarking on a late-night odyssey rife with medical and supernatural mystery with dad.
Layer by layer, their forensic examination reveals evidence of inhuman internal injury, belying Jane Doe’s eerily serene, undamaged exterior. Vicious scarring, burns, and dismemberment abound in the corpse’s viscera, raising endless questions and alarm as the duo cuts through flesh, bone, and a sinister case of the heebie-jeebies.
While a violent tempest rages outside, a metaphysical one quietly forms around them and this curious cadaver; the closer they get to the truth of her mortality, the closer they find themselves faced with their own.
Norwegian director André Øvredal (Troll Hunter) makes his highly anticipated English-language debut with a uniquely terrifying, enigmatic tale that will force deep pondering of the phrase “the ties that bind.” A not-to-be-missed chiller that cuts to the bone.
