LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU

Possibly the best documentary about the folly of filmmaking I’ve ever seen and certainly one of the best films of 2014.

After the cult success of both Hardware and Dust Devil director Richard Stanley was given the keys to Hollywood with a modest 8 million dollar version of the Island Of Dr. Moreau (his dream project) which quickly ballooned to a 35 million dollar production starring Marlon Brando & Val Kilmer. What follows is one of the most jaw dropping stories of excess, madness and sheer bad luck that has ever been told.

Nobody comes out unscathed (especially the demanding stars) and an air of sadness undercuts the sheer insanity of the story.

“To strip it down to the barest bones, what we have here is a perfectly realized, impeccably paced film truly worthy of the oft-too-casually tossed about accolade instant classic—think the landmark nuttiness-behind-the-scenes APOCALYPSE NOW doc HEARTS OF DARKNESS cross-pollinated with such quirky, dish-y genre deep dives as AMERICAN MOVIE and BEST WORST MOVIE and you’ll be getting pretty damn warm.” Fangoria
