Invasion of the Body SnatchersDouble Feature w/THE INVITATION / October 5 | 10:00pm
It’s not hard to see why director Karyn Kusama (THE INVITATION) wanted to pair her film with classic sci-fi remake from 1978 as it is absolutely filled with an air of paranoia and distrust which sits perfectly with her tightly crafted shocker.
Set in San Francisco, the film centers around health inspector Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) who begins to notice his friends acting aloof, detached and not interested in normal day to day life. Bennell decides to investigate what is happening in his city and it isn’t long before he uncovers an alien invasion systematically taking place right under his nose: Humans are being replaced by drone like Pod people and it’s fairly obvious they aren’t going to stop until they take over the word.
It all sounds a bit silly on paper but Kaufman and cinematographer Michael Chapman (TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL) give the film a realistic and gritty tone, that helps elevate the story into something wholly believable.
The cast includes Leonard Nimoy, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum whom all deliver note perfect performances.
Focussing on a small group of people while still telling a wider story of a large city where people are too busy with their lives to even notice (or care) what is happening around them is absolutely chilling on every level.
Filled with outstanding practical effects, piercing sound design and at least one absolutely jaw dropping image that will stay with you long after you leave the theatre, this is one invasion you do not want to miss.
