A mysterious stranger and a random act of violence drags a town of misfits and nitwits into the bloody crosshairs of Ti West’s revenge western.

Like the lead in his new film, Ti West is a man of mystery. The Philly (now LA) wunderkind possessed our minds with the 80’s retro-shocker THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL at a time that the Stranger Things kids were in diapers.

He then pivoted with the quietly-creepy THE INKEEPERS before going suicidally-super-dark with THE SACRAMENT. Include the stellar shorts and TV shows he’s directed in between and you have a human Swiss Army knife: he can do anything. With his new film, the bloody revenge western IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, he downright confirms it.

A mysterious drifter named Paul (Ethan Hawke) and his dog Abbie (Jumpy) make their way towards Mexico landing themselves in the forgotten town of Denton – a place now dubbed by locals as a “valley of violence.”

The once popular mining town is nearly abandoned, and controlled by a brash group of misfits – chief among them, the seemingly untouchable, Gilly (James Ransone) who is the troublemaking son of the town’s unforgiving Marshal (John Travolta).

As tensions rise, Denton’s remaining residents bear witness to an inevitable act of violence that starts a disastrous chain reaction that drags the town into the bloody crosshairs of revenge.

Mary-Anne (Taissa Farmiga) and Ellen (Karen Gillan), try to find the good in both men, while desperately searching for their own salvation. Only the Marshal struggles to stop the violent hysteria, but after a gruesome discovery about Paul’s past…there is no stopping the escalation.

IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE allows West to flourish in a way that he hasn’t before as he brings brings his absurdist humor, unique dialog and trademark shocking violence to the Western genre. It’s a bold turn for West and a fresh approach to a (mostly) dusty genre and he flexes his muscles and viscerally drives his way through the old West.

We’re proud to have West as this year’s LA Spotlight director and we look forward to having him back for many more.
